Labor Day Menu
As the warm sun-drenched days of summer begin to wane, Labor Day emerges as the quintessential farewell to this beloved season. This annual holiday marks the symbolic end of summer and stands as a celebration of the hardworking spirit that defines our nation. It's a time when families and friends come together for one last hurrah, basking in the fading sunlight, savoring the simple joys of life, and relishing the sensory delights of food and music. Below is a short list that joins two of my passions - food and music - in a final embrace before we welcome the cooler days of fall.
"Banana Pancakes" by Jack Johnson. Where better to start than with breakfast? Jack Johnson's "Banana Pancakes" is a mellow and delightful addition to your playlist, especially if you're day is starting with breakfast or brunch. And hopefully, it’s not raining outside where you are.
"Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" by Hank Williams If you're planning to include some Cajun or Creole dishes on your Labor Day menu, this classic country song is a perfect fit, as it celebrates Louisiana cuisine. Like Jambalaya itself, everyone has a unique version of this song. My favorites include the Creedence Clearwater Revival and Harry Connick Jr. versions; however, whatever version you may choose, Laissez les bons temps rouler!
"Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown Band. This tune epitomizes the spirit of Labor Day. With its lyrics celebrating the joys of southern cuisine and the comforts of home, it's a song that encapsulates the essence of this holiday—a time when we savor the simple pleasures of life, indulge in delicious food, and let the music carry us away.
"Cheeseburger in Paradise" by Jimmy Buffett. A staple for any summer playlist, this classic Jimmy Buffett song celebrates the joy of enjoying a delicious cheeseburger in a tropical paradise. RIP Jimmy, this Labor Day, we will be enjoying both your music and your memory.
"American Pie" by Don McLean. As you close the evening, what is better than a little dessert? While the song doesn't specifically mention food, it references the phrase "the day the music died," which can be a nod to your Labor Day in several ways, including the end of summer. However, if you want to keep the party rolling then why not try the "Savoy Truffle" by The Beatles? This song, written by George Harrison, references a variety of sweets and confections in its lyrics, making it a great choice to close out the evening.
However, you decide to spend your day and enjoy a symphony of flavors and melodies that represent the changing of the seasons.
